Choose Your Receiver Family:

Follow this guide to set up your replacement Hopper receiver.

  1. Put other receivers in standby

    Before you set up your new Hopper, ensure all other receivers in your home are in standby mode.

    To do this, press the POWER button on the front of each receiver to turn the green light off. Leave them off until you finish replacing your Hopper, so that they update properly.

  2. Unplug the current receiver

    Locate the power cable for the receiver you are replacing and unplug it from the wall.

  3. Unpack the new Hopper

    Unpack the contents of the box. You will need the box and packaging material to return the old Hopper.

  4. Swap the old and new Hoppers

    If you can, set the new Hopper on top of the old one and transfer the cables one at a time.

    Otherwise, carefully note the labels on the old Hopper where each cable is connected before disconnecting the cables.

  5. Connect Hopper-to-wall wiring

    Screw the coax cable into the port labeled "To Node" and make sure it is connected hand-tight at the wall.

  6. Connect Hopper-to-TV wiring

    Different video cable types are shown below. Connect your video cable to the back of the Hopper and make sure it is connected tightly at the TV as well.

  7. Connect the remote antenna

    Unscrew the remote antenna from the old Hopper and connect it to the new Hopper

  8. Power on the Hopper

    Plug the electrical cord (typically has a red tag) of the Hopper into an electrical outlet.

    Use the Power button on the front of the Hopper to power it on.

  9. Look for the Installation Wizard

    On the TV screen, you will see the Installation Wizard

  10. Let the satellite check finish

    The Hopper will check satellites automatically then proceed to the next step on its own (may take up to 5 minutes).

    If the Hopper does not go to the next step after 5 minutes, contact us.

    The Hopper will download software automatically then proceed to the next step on its own (may take 20 minutes).

    If the Hopper does not go to the next step after 20 minutes, contact us.

  12. Pair your remote to the new Hopper

    Press the SAT button on the remote. The remote will beep, indicating that it has paired successfully.

    On the TV screen, select Next to continue to the next step.

  13. Choose your location

    Choose the name which best describes the room where your new Hopper is located.

    On the TV screen, select Next to continue to the next step.

  14. Set your video resolution

    Choose the best resolution that your TV supports. If you aren't sure, check your TV documentation or just try "4K, 1080p, or 1080i" first.

    On the TV screen, select Next then Keep to save the resolution and continue to the next step.

  15. Let the connectivity test finish

    The Hopper will test for phone and internet connection automatically (may take up to 3 minutes). When the test is complete, select Next.

    If the test does not complete after 3 minutes, contact us.

  16. Activate your new Hopper

    If your Hopper is internet-connected it may begin activation automatically.

    If it is not connected or does not begin activating, you may activate the Hopper by logging into your account at mydish.com/equipment or by contacting us.

  17. (Optional) Restore recordings

    If you backed up your DVR recordings you can restore them now.

  18. Return your old Hopper

    Remove any devices or adapters from the old Hopper (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, External Hard Drives, etc.) and connect them to the new Hopper.

    Place the foam around the old Hopper.

    Place the foam-covered Hopper into the cardboard box.

    Tape the flaps of the box down.

    Remove the original shipping label from the box; the return label is on the other side.

    Place the return label where the original label was previously.

    Select the Hopper you want the new Joey to be linked to, then press Select again to link. After the screen shows "Linked" on the right, select the Next button.

    If your Joey is internet-connected it may begin activation automatically.

    If it is not connected or does not begin activating, you may activate the Joey by logging into your account at mydish.com/equipment or by contacting us.

    Remove any devices or adapters from the old Joey (Bluetooth, etc.) and connect them to the new Joey.

    Place the foam around the old Joey.

    On your DISH remote, press the SAT button, then the Record button. A number will appear on the TV screen in the box to the right.

    Use the remote to select the Continue button at the bottom of the screen.

  9. Get the remote for the secondary TV

    This receiver is designed to run two TVs. If you have a second TV running off this receiver, get the remote from that room and bring it back to the room where you are setting up the new receiver.

    If you don't have a second TV, skip to step 11.

  10. Program the secondary remote

    On your secondary DISH remote, press the SAT button, then the Record button. A number will appear on the TV screen in the box to the right.

    Now put the secondary remote back in the room with the secondary TV, then continue setting up the new receiver.

    Use the primary DISH remote to select the Continue button at the bottom of the screen.

  11. Let the software download

    The receiver will download software automatically, then proceed to the next step on its own (may take 20 minutes).

    If the receiver does not go to the next step after 20 minutes, contact us.

  12. Select the secondary TV channel

    On the TV screen, select the channel number that your secondary TV is tuned to.

    If you aren't sure which channel to select, go to your secondary TV and check it for a DISH message. When you see a DISH message on your secondary TV the correct channel number is selected.

    Select the Continue button at the bottom of the screen.

  14. Let the connectivity test finish

    The receiver will test for phone and internet connection automatically (may take up to 3 minutes). When the test is complete, select the Continue button at the bottom of the screen.

    If the test does not complete after 3 minutes, contact us.

  15. Activate your new receiver

    If your receiver is internet-connected it may begin activation automatically.

    If it is not connected or does not begin activating, you may activate the receiver by logging into your account at mydish.com/equipment or by contacting us.

    Select the Live TV button on the screen.

    The receiver may take up to 5 minutes to acquire signal.

  19. (Optional) Restore recordings

    If your receiver is a DVR and you backed up your recordings you can restore them now.

  20. Return your old receiver

    Remove any devices or adapters from the old receiver (Wi-Fi, Sling Adapter, etc.) and connect them to the new receiver.

    Place the foam around the old receiver.

    Place the foam-covered receiver into the cardboard box.

    Tape the flaps of the box down.

    Remove the original shipping label from the box; the return label is on the other side.

    Place the return label where the original label was previously.

    Different video cable types are shown below. Connect your video cable to the back of the receiver and make sure it is connected tightly at the TV as well.

    Plug the electrical cord of the receiver into an electrical outlet.

    Use the Power button on the front of the receiver to power it on.

  7. Look for the Installation Wizard

    On the TV screen, you will see the Installation Wizard

    On your DISH remote, press the SAT button, then the Record button. A number will appear on the TV screen in the box to the right.

    Use the remote to select the Continue button at the bottom of the screen.

    The receiver will download software automatically, then proceed to the next step on its own (may take 20 minutes).

    If the receiver does not go to the next step after 20 minutes, contact us.

  10. Set your video resolution

    Choose the best resolution that your TV supports. If you aren't sure, check your TV documentation or just try "1080i (HD)" first.

    On the TV screen, select Test then Save to save the resolution and continue to the next step.

    Press the SYSTEM INFO button on the front panel of your DISH receiver.

    If your receiver does not have a SYSTEM INFO button, turn the receiver off using the POWER button, then press the CHANNEL UP button while the receiver is turned off.

  8. Program the remote

    On your DISH remote, press the SAT button then the Record button. A number will appear on the TV screen in the box to the right.

  9. Get the remote for the secondary TV

    This receiver is designed to run two TVs. If you have a secondary TV running off this receiver, get the remote from that room and bring it back to the room where you are setting up the new receiver.

    If you don't have a secondary TV, skip to step 14.

  10. Program the secondary remote

    On your secondary DISH remote, press the SAT button then the Record button. A number will appear on the TV screen in the box to the right.

    Now put the secondary remote back in the room with the secondary TV, then continue setting up the new receiver.

    Use the primary DISH remote to select the Done button at the bottom of the screen.

  11. Is there a picture or DISH message on the secondary TV?

    If your secondary TV has a picture or DISH message on the screen, skip to step 14; otherwise, continue with the next step.

  12. Access Modulator Setup

    On the DISH remote, press MENU. On the TV screen, select System Setup, then Installation, then Modulator Setup.

  13. Change TV2 Out setting

    On the Modulator Setup screen on the right-hand side under "TV2 Out", select Cable, then select the Done button on the right. If you see a picture or DISH message on the secondary TV, then continue with the next step.

    If you are unable to get a picture or DISH message on the secondary TV, please contact us.

  14. Access Installation Summary

    On the DISH remote, press MENU. On the TV screen, select System Setup, then Installation, then Point Dish. On the right side of the screen, select Check Switch.

  15. Run a Check Switch Test

    Select the Test button on the bottom of the screen. This test may take up to 5 minutes. When the test is complete, select the Done button at the bottom of the screen.

  16. Wait for signal lock

    At the bottom of the screen the signal bar will turn green. When the word "Locked" appears under the signal bar, select the Done button.

    The receiver will download software and program its memory, restarting in the process. It will automatically proceed to the next step on its own (may take 20 minutes).

    If the receiver does not go to the next step after 20 minutes, contact us.
